Times SquareEarlier the headoffice for New York Times

Times Square got it´s name after the newspaper "The New York Times" that once had their headoffice located here. It is not a real "square" area but more a cross-section. In 1904 this place got the name Times Square (earlier Longacre Square) and at the same time a subway was buildt in this area and it got the same name.

New Year celebration

This area is also famous for itīs yearly celebration at New Year. Through the years New Years eve has been celebrated here in many different ways. Year 1904-1906 the evening was celebrated with fireworks displayed from one of the buildnings roof. This was later on forbidden and was replaced in 1907 with a big ball that was dropped to celebrate the first day of the new year. After II World War there was a minute of silence and then also recorded churchbells that were ringing.

Then and now

Times Square has grown already from the start and is today known for itīs theatres, concerthalls and spectacular hotels. During the I World War, Times Square was the most known place in the US for itīs theatres showes. Here has among others, Fred Astaire and Charlie Chaplin performed.

During the 1930īs (the depression) the place was famous for itīs cheep tourist shops and a haunt of erotic of different kind as sexshops and movies etc. Between 1960 - 1990 the place was known as a dangerous place. In the middle of 1990īs the mayor Rudolph Giuliani (1994-2002) decided to clean up the area. Sexshops had to close, they had more thoughts for the tourists and adapted the area for this, more security was also introduced. Several theatres also went through a hole part of restorations.

Times Square
Today the place is known for itīs neon signs. The most famous one is the NASDAQ stock exchange and General Motors sign that present the news from NBC. You also find a whole lot of famous shops here at Times Square as Toyīs R Us, the Virgin Megastore (the worlds biggest record store) etc. Some well-known restaurants as Ruby Foos, Carmine etc.

Some people really think this place have become a little boring and have lost itīs charm in some way. Many compare this place as an organized "Disneyland". But Times Square is anyway Times Square - the best thing is to experience the place by yourselve.

Times Square is the place you always return to in New York!
This is probably the place all visitors end up some time during their New York trip. We also return here every time. Okay, it is very packed with people almost daily, during all hours, but there is still a special feeling to stand here and soak up the atmosphere.

The Naked Cowboy
One person we heard about is The Naked Cowboy, who is said to stand in the middle of Times Square in just underwear, cowboy boots, cowboy hat and his guitar. And .... it is absolutely true. One Saturday afternoon when we were walking up to Times Square, we see a crowd of peope with cameras. We wondered what was goingon and we went forward, Oh, yes, there was the Naked Cowboy and played on his guitar and was happy to pose with all the tourists. What don´t you do for a good picture .... so we also had to pose with him...it is, after all, New York. Below you see our pictures... we do not know if he is here in the winter time... do not think so :)
