Art deco
The buildning is an example of art deco-architecture from 1920´s. Chrysler Building
is one of the most well-known buildnings in the world. Height 1.046 feet, 77 stories high and
in the top the unusual spire. Chrysler Building is build by well polished chrome steel
that are glimmering even when it is cloudy over Manhattan. The buildning have decorative
cocks at the 59th floor and eagles at 61st floor.
The best way to view Chrysler Building is from one of the visitor areas in the
Empire State Buildning. Earlier The Chrysler Corporation had their office here, but not any longer.
1929 - The Worlds tallest building
When the building was under construction it was a struggle in town and in the world
which building that should be the tallest city building. Several architects were struggling
in the fight. When the building was done in 1929, the Manhattan Bank was higher (approx
with 60 feet). But in Chrysler Building they had withholded the famous spire, within
90 minutes they rose the spire and in this moment they even passed the Eiffel Tower in Paris and
became then the worlds tallest building.
The opening ceremonies are held 27 May, 1930.
This made the architect William Van Alen famous, in any case until the Empire State Building
became the tallest building (1931).
Visit the lobby
The public can only visit the lobby, if you haven´t booked an appointment with someone
on any of the 77 floors in the buildning. The walls and the roofs are made of imported marble
from Africa, they are decorated with construction builders busy with putting up the spire.
The elevators are made of impressive wood.
